He's the only US intelligence officer convicted twice of betraying his country. And he's the only one to have pulled it off from behind prison bars. He was arrested in 1996 on the tarmac at Dulles Airport, and convicted of espionage in 1997. His conviction was based in part on surveillance photos of him stepping into a car with Russian diplomatic plates in Singapore. While in prison he successfully co-opted his own son Nathan into passing additional information to Russia. He was motivated by a desire for money and an egotistical desire to be seen providing his family a lavish lifestyle. He is due to be released from prison in 2024.
