The complete collection of seven stamps depicting the spies known as the Cuban Five.
These stamps were printed in Cuba and depict Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino, Fernando González, and René González, all of whom were arrested in September 1998. The men had traveled to Miami, FL from Cuba with the mission to infiltrate some of the many anti-Castro Cuban exile groups operating in the area. Collectively they were known as the Wasp Network.
They were successful in gaining the trust of the anti-Castro Miami Cubans and were finally arrested after four Miami-based pilots were shot down by Cuban MiG-29 fighters in 1998. The pilots were members of Brothers to the Rescue, a group which aided refugees traveling from Cuba to Miami, and sometimes dropped propaganda leaflets over Cuba as well.
All five men were featured on a 65 centavo stamp first printed in 2005, and later in 2007 received their own individual stamps.
The story was recently told in the 2019 Netflix film Wasp Network.
All stamp sets are shipped in a protective cardboard display card, and include a free Soviet ruble from the KGB Museum in New York City and two free miscellaneous Cold War stamps, while supplies last.
